Cervicogenic headaches are headaches caused by stress or dysfunction in the upper cervical spine. This can be caused by neck injuries, such as a whiplash injury or muscle strain, or postural dysfunction. Sitting with a forward head and rounded shoulders posture can create tension at the base of the skull, where many neck muscles attach. This tension can also be associated with stiff upper neck joints, and this can cause headaches.
Some symptoms of cervicogenic headaches include pain around the temples and eyes, dizziness, feeling off-balance, sensitivity to pressure changes during storms, and photosensitivity. People who suffer from migraines may also describe these symptoms, but sometimes there is dysfunction in the upper cervical spine that is the source instead.
A systematic review published in the Journal of Manual and Manipulative Therapy found that a combination of physical therapist-provided manipulation and mobilization of the cervical spine combined with cervico-scapular strengthening was the most effective for decreasing pain and cervicogenic headaches. Another article from the European Journal of Pain stated that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective short-term treatment for pain intensity, frequency, and disability compared to other manual therapies.. This means that in one physical therapy session, effective manual therapy techniques can decrease symptoms..
